The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement launched Operation Catch of the Day across Maine to arrest criminal illegal aliens convicted of violent offenses, including Ambessa Berhe from Ethiopia.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, ICE initiated Operation Catch of the Day on January 20, 2026, targeting criminal illegal aliens in Maine convicted of serious crimes such as aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and endangering the welfare of a child. Arrests on the first day included Ambessa Berhe from Ethiopia, Dominic Ali from Sudan, Elmara Correia from Angola, and Dany Lopez-Cortez from Guatemala. The operation aims to remove threats to community safety.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said that agents arrested over 50 criminal illegal aliens on the first day of Operation Catch of the Day in Maine, with about 1,400 targets identified statewide. The operation targets individuals convicted of violent crimes including aggravated assault and child endangerment.

The Department reported that more than 670,000 illegal aliens were removed in the first year, including murderers, pedophiles, rapists, gang members, and terrorists. Additionally, another two million self-deported. Seventy percent of ICE arrests involve criminal illegal aliens convicted or charged with crimes in the U.S., supporting public safety across the nation.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was created in 2002 to unify national efforts in preventing terrorism and securing borders among other responsibilities. It integrates 22 federal agencies with over 240,000 employees.
