Maine’s Obsolete Pesticide Collection Program will hold free disposal events for unwanted pesticides this October in Presque Isle, Bangor, Augusta, and Portland. The program requires pre-registration by September 26.

The initiative is organized by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Board of Pesticides Control (BPC) in collaboration with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Its purpose is to prevent improper pesticide disposal that could contaminate soil and water resources, potentially harming people, animals, and wildlife.

Since its start in 1982, the program has removed over 250,000 pounds of hazardous pesticides from the waste stream. Materials collected are handled by a licensed hazardous waste contractor and transported to out-of-state facilities that comply with environmental safety standards.

Karla Boyd, BPC Policy & Regulations Specialist, said: “This program provides safe and environmentally responsible disposal of unwanted pesticides for homeowners and family-owned farms. By participating, people are directly protecting our land and water for future generations.Always read and follow pesticide label instructions for proper use, storage, and disposal. For additional tips, visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.”

For further information about registration or event details, individuals can contact Karla Boyd at Karla.Boyd@maine.gov.
