The University of Maine athletics department announced on May 19 the passing of Richard “Dick” Todd, a former offensive lineman and defensive tackle for the Black Bears.
Todd played for the University of Maine football team from 1968 to 1971 and graduated in the spring of 1972. He joined as a walk-on and became an important part of the offensive line before moving to defensive tackle in his senior year.
Head football coach Jordan Stevens said, “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Dick Todd. Dick was a champion on the field and in life. We will honor Dick’s legacy of commitment to excellence on and off the field.”
During his time with the team, Todd contributed to one of its most productive seasons. In 1969, he helped lead an offensive line that achieved what was then the second-best passing season in program history with 1,347 yards and 12 touchdowns. That same year, the team also rushed for 1,379 yards—the highest total during his tenure at UMaine.
Todd and his wife Maureen have been significant contributors to both the Alfond Fund and University of Maine Foundation since graduating from UMaine.
The university recognized Todd’s impact both on and off the field.
