Amazon received $578,828 in subsidies, tax breaks, and grants from Maine communities for 11 projects.

Advocacy group Good Jobs First, which opposes such subsidies, found Maine provided the 38th-highest amount of grants and breaks among U.S. states to the nearly $1-trillion company.

Maine provided the smallest breaks and subsidies to Amazon behind Rhode Island (1 project/$3 million), Nevada (5 projects/$3 million), and Arizona (2 projects/$5 million).

The two largest subsidies provided in Maine were from the Portland government, equaling nearly $151,000 in property tax abatements.

There were no developments which received undisclosed subsidy amounts.

Transparency laws in Maine were once considered the national standard, but were repealed in 2008 and never replaced.

Large retailers in Maine get their stores appraised as if they were empty, leading to low property taxes, even if the stores are full of merchandise.

As of Nov. 17, 2022, Amazon had received 310 separate tax break deals from local and state governments across the U.S., totaling $5.14 billion. The state of Virginia was home to the largest portion of these taxpayer-subsidized Amazon projects.
