A New York resident has pleaded guilty in federal court in Bangor, Maine to charges of possessing heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine base with the intent to distribute. The case stems from an investigation by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office into suspected drug trafficking at a residence in Avon.
According to court records, authorities executed a search warrant at the Avon property in July 2020. Oscarlin Peguero Ortiz, 27, was found inside the residence. Law enforcement officials seized about 85 grams of a mixture containing heroin and fentanyl, as well as 40 grams of crack cocaine. They also confiscated digital scales, drug paraphernalia, and more than $8,000 in cash.
Ortiz faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine up to $1 million, and supervised release for at least three years up to life. Sentencing will take place after completion of a presentence investigative report by the U.S. Probation Office. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge after consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.
The investigation involved several agencies including the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Maine State Police, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
