Bangor, ME – On June 09, 2023, U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered remarks at Maine Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW) 102nd state convention. The State Convention consists of a series of business meetings and updates on veterans’ issues.

“Around our state and in our communities, the VFW provides support to patriots serving today, as well as to their families, and offers a helping hand to those who served in the past,” said Senator Collins.  “Each of you, through your service, makes me proud to be a life member of the VFW Auxiliary in my hometown of Caribou.”

During her remarks, Senator Collins recognized this year’s two Maine winners of the VFW’s Voice of Democracy and Patriots’ Pen Essay Competition, Annora Ferris and Hunter Edson. Collins also commended the VFW for their ongoing efforts to provide veterans with the medical and social support they’ve earned through their service.

Last year, with strong support from the VFW, Collins championed the passage of the PACT Act, a bipartisan bill to ensure that all generations of veterans exposed to and made ill by toxins receive the health care and benefits they have earned through their service.  Following this, Collins co-sponsored the Protect Camp Lejeune VETS Act, which caps the fees lawyers can charge veterans filing a lawsuit under the PACT Act.

The Department of Maine VFW, established in 1921, is a nonprofit veteran’s service organization for eligible veterans and military service members from the active, guard, and reserve forces.
