The The College of the Atlantic Summer Institute is COA’s week-long ideas festival that welcomes experts from around the world to share perspectives on the most pressing issues of our time.
The 2022 Summer Institute: Our One and Only Ocean will explore the beauty, promise, and perils of our greatest commons—the ocean.
This year, we are pleased to feature renowned leaders and Explorers from the global nonprofit organization the National Geographic Society.
You’ll hear from CEO Jill Tiefenthaler about the Society’s efforts to illuminate and protect the wonder of our world, as well as oceanographer Bob Ballard, who discovered the sunken RMS Titanic, photographer Brian Skerry, who revealed unprecedented insights about whale culture, and storyteller Tara Roberts, whose journey to reveal the lost stories of the transatlantic slave trade captured the world’s attention.
Speakers from Oceana include actor and board chair Sam Waterston, board members Sir David Rockefeller and Susan Rockefeller, CEO Andrew Sharpless, and chief policy officer Jackie Savitz. Other voices include Maine representative and commercial fisherman Genevieve McDonald, Billion Oyster Project's Tanasia Swift, co-founder of the Society of Black Archaeologists Justin Dunnavant, Atlantic Sea Farms CEO Briana Warner, and Hollander and de Koning‘s Fiona de Koning.
