University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls Basketball Falls to Fighting Tigers in Home Opener

The Owls men’s basketball team hosted the first game in the UMPI Athletics newly renovated Wieden Gymnasium. The Owls hosted North Atlantic Conference cross-divisional opponent SUNY Cobleskill in their first home game of the year. The Owls lost to the Fighting Tigers 74-70. This loss brings the Owls to 2-7 and 0-2 in the NAC.

The Owls found themselves behind early as the Fighting Tigers gradually built a lead in the first half. Going into halftime down by nine points, the Owls looked to bounce back. The team battled back and forth, although it wasn’t until the final six minutes of the game where the Owls finally started to make their run. Bringing themselves within two points with one minute left in the game. Although it was not enough as the Tigers put the game away late, hitting their free throws down the stretch.

The Owls comeback efforts were led by Griffin Guerrette, finishing the game with 20 points off 8-17 shooting. Akhe McMichael finished the game with 15 points off 7-12 shooting. KJ Minter, was a beast in the paint for the Owls, finishing the game with 13 points and 13 rebounds with 5-9 shooting from the field.
