Zoe Furber of Vancouver, British Columbia was named the Outstanding Graduating International Student in the College of Earth, Life, and Health Sciences at the University of Maine, according to an April 17 announcement. Furber is a double major in marine science and biology with a concentration in marine biology. She has also been a member of the UMaine Field Hockey team since 2022 and served as captain in 2025.

The recognition highlights Furber’s academic achievements as well as her leadership on campus. During her time at UMaine, she completed a capstone project that compared ocean temperatures in the Gulf of Maine to heart rate metrics of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis). Her research experience expanded her understanding of sustainability and corporate strategy while developing skills such as leadership, teamwork, and time management.

Furber participated in a three-week research program in Cancun, Mexico where she studied coral disease impacts on coral species. She also interned for PricewaterhouseCoopers Canada for two summers within internal and technology strategy groups. “These experiences have improved my understanding of sustainability and corporate strategy, while helping me develop leadership, teamwork, research and time management skills and preparing me for the future,” said Furber.

She credited professors William Ellis and Paul Rawson with enhancing her undergraduate experience. “I worked with Dr. Rawson on my capstone project, and his guidance and commitment to his students really accelerated my learning,” said Furber. She described Dr. Ellis as an excellent role model during her four years at UMaine.

Reflecting on her athletic involvement outside academics, Furber said field hockey taught her about teamwork and commitment: “Beyond academics, I have learned so much about teamwork and commitment through my four years of Division I field hockey.” She added that studying at UMaine allowed her to gain life experience far from home.

Looking ahead after graduation this spring, Furber plans to pursue a Master of Science degree in Global Strategy and Sustainability at the University of Edinburgh while continuing to play field hockey for another year.
