The Colby Men's Tennis team participated in their final competition of the fall season this past weekend at the Wallach invitational, hosted by Bates College. The Mules were joined by Skidmore, Trinity and Bates for an action-packed weekend of tennis. Colby had three players in each of the three singles flights and two doubles teams in each of the two doubles flights.
The Mules took home hardware in four of five flights, crowning champions in A & B singles and both doubles draws.
Highlighting the weekend for the Mules was sophomore Jake Cohen. In the A flight singles, Cohen knocked out Alex Gujarathi of Bates 6-4, 2-6, 10-3 after getting a bye in the first round. In the semifinals, Cohen saved match points to defeat top seeded Brendan Jimenez of Skidmore 6-3, 4-6, 11-9. In the final round, Cohen overcame a match point yet again in his battle with Trinity's Henry Bilic. Cohen won 3-6, 7-6(2), 10-8. Senior captain Jan Wenger won his first round in the A flight as well, defeating Leo Kupferman of Bates in two tiebreak sets 7-6(3), 7-6(6) before falling to Jimenez in the following round.
In the B flight, Colby senior Ben Powis defeated opponents from Skidmore, Bates and Trinity en route to his first collegiate title. Powis defeated Nika Mori of Skidmore 1-6, 6-2, 10-6 in the quarterfinals and then dominated Matthew Danielson of Bates in the following round 6-1, 6-3. Powis took out Brandon Felcher of Trinity 6-2, 0-6, 10-6 in the finals to win the flight.
Mules sophomore Ram Das made his 2022 season debut and came up just short in taking home the C draw. Das defeated Ben Adey of Bates 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and then battled past fellow Mule Josh Kaplan 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals. Das battled against Pierce Rutledge of Trinity in the finals, but fell by just a few points in the match tiebreak 3-6, 7-5, 10-7. Sophomore Josh Kaplan knocked out Jude Ogilivie of Skidmore 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals before meeting Das in the semifinal.
In the A flight doubles, Colby duo of Cohen/Wenger took out the competition in commanding fashion. They defeated the Bates team of Teddy Koide and Nick Forester 8-6 and then took out another Bates team by the same scoreline in the following round. The senior and sophomore rose to the occasion in the final round and overcame Skidmore's Sergiu Celebidachi and Jimenez 8-5. Colby's Joey Barrett and James Bogdanovic won their first round in the top flight as well, taking out Eduardo Sanchez-Carrion and Rutledge 8-7(4) before losing to Celebidachi and Jimenez in the semifinals.
The B doubles flight was an all Mules contest, as both tandems met in the final round. Sophomore's Das and Kaplan defeated Bates duo of Alex Archer and Paul Zhou 8-4, and then Evangelo Kapothanasis and Adey of Bates 8-3. Colby seniors Josh Fleishman and Powis took out Mori and Ogilivie of Skidmore 8-2 and Marcus Carlsson and Kartik Erodula of Trinity 8-3 before meeting their teammates in the finals. Das and Kaplan came out on top, overcoming Fleishman and Powis 8-7(5) and taking home the B doubles crown.
The Mules wrapped up their fall campaign on a high note and now move into the offseason with serious momentum. The men will kick off their spring journey in early March.
