Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered remarks at the Military Women's Memorial Celebrating 75 Years of Women Serving in the United States Armed Forces alongside Frist Lady Jill Biden. The event recognized Women Veterans Recognition Day and the 75th Anniversary of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, the legislation that gave women a permanent place in the US military and the opportunity to make the military their career. Former Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith, then a U.S. Representative, proposed the legislation, and her steadfast leadership ensured that the legislation passed.

“The women veterans and those who currently serve are the true guests of honor on this special day,” Collins remarked. “You prove the adage that some of a woman’s strength comes not ‘in spite’ of being a woman, but ‘because’ she is a woman.”

“Throughout our nation’s history, American women have stood strong for freedom.  Today, as never before, they are adding inspiring new chapters,” Collins continued. “Theirs is the story of ordinary citizens answering the call of duty, defending our freedom, and extending the blessings of freedom to others around the world.  They, and you here today, have earned our deepest respect and our enduring gratitude.”

At the event, Senator Collins, who currently and proudly holds Senator Smith’s seat, presented the Senator Margaret Chase Smith Leadership Award to retired Air Force Brigadier General Wilma L. Vaught, one of the most highly decorated military women in United States history.

The day’s festivities were hosted by the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation, and more than 300 military women and supporters attended the sold-out event, in celebration of the integration of women into the U.S. Armed Forces.
