Six Republicans voted to proceed with President Donald Trump's impeachment trial.
The final vote on Tuesday tallied to 56-44 with the trial scheduled the following day.
Sen. Bill Cassidy, who earlier said that the Trump impeachment did not follow a formal process and likened it to Soviet Union show trials, has joined Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Susan Collins (Maine), Ben Sasse (Neb.), Pat Toomey (Pa.), and Mitt Romney (Utah) in agreeing to hold the trial.
Cassidy’s vote could add fuel to the loyalty divisions within the Republican caucus. Sasse for one has received criticism from different Nebraska counties and might be facing censure.
According to The Epoch Times, disputes may also come from Trump’s family. Donald Trump Jr. said he would be campaigning in Wyoming against Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), who voted along with Democrats to impeach Trump last month.
“It’s time to have a change at the top. It’s time to have people that are going to start representing the people, not their own agendas, not their own nonsense, but their constituency,” Trump Jr. said.
A majority two-thirds vote is required to convict Trump, which means for a conviction, all Democrats and 17 more Republicans are needed to break away from the rest of the GOP.
