The Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) is set to begin work on reconstructing the intersection of Route 219, Route 4, Bear Pond Road, and Howe's Corner Road in Turner. The construction aims to convert the current configuration from a skewed, four-way intersection into two, three-legged intersections. This adjustment is intended to address safety concerns in this high-crash area by simplifying turning and crossing. The plan includes reconfiguring Route 219 and realigning the roadways.
Construction activities are scheduled to start on Monday, March 31. During this period, traffic on Route 219 will be limited to a single lane of alternating traffic. Route 4 will maintain one lane in both directions but could also be restricted to a single lane of alternating traffic if necessary to ensure safety while positioning equipment and barriers. Construction will take place between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on weekdays, with no plans for weekend work.
The project is expected to be completed by October of this year. Gendron & Gendron of Lewiston is the contractor managing the project, which has a contract amount of $2.8 million.
