The Husson University men's lacrosse team opened their North Atlantic Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon as they collected the program's first-ever double overtime victory by beating SUNY Canton, 12-11.
The Eagles (5-3, 1-0 NAC) opened the contest on the front foot by scoring the first three goals of the contest via goals from junior Danny Carter, freshman Bryce DeRonda, and senior Matt Boynton. Late in the first quarter, the Roos (2-5, 1-2 NAC) would respond with two straight goals before Boynton scored his second goal of the while the Eagles were defending a penalty.
The Eagles led 4-2 to begin the second quarter when the Kangaroos were able to tie the game five minutes into the period. The game would stay tied for four minutes before Boynton was able to complete his hat trick followed by sophomore Sean Lyne firing a goal, forty seconds later. The host would score their fifth goal of the game before graduate student Gunner McAllister connected on his 20th goal of the season and give Husson a 7-5 halftime lead.
The scoring in the third quarter was non-existence until halfway through the quarter when freshman Kolton Gillilian put home his second goal of the season followed by McAllister's second of the game. Another run for the Kangaroos saw them score three unanswered goals, but senior Ben Huynh regained the two goal lead for the green and gold before the end of the quarter.
McAllister recorded his hat trick to begin the quarter as the Eagles led, 11-8. The New York school, though, would force overtime after scoring the final three goals of regulation.
In the first overtime, both teams had a chance to win the conference matchup as both goalies stood tall to force the second extra four minute period.
Senior Jacob Larochelle won the face-off to begin the second overtime and 38 seconds later; the game was over. Boynton was able to score the winner as he came from behind the net and his bounced shot beat the goalkeeper.
Boynton led the Eagles' offense with four goals and an assist while Lyne recorded the other assist. Larochelle won 22-of-27 face-offs as he picked up 17 ground balls while forcing two turnovers as well as senior Gus Eisenmann. Freshman Oden Burk picked up the victory in goal after recording nine saves.
After many road trips for the men's lacrosse team; they finally prepare for their home opener. The Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill will make the trek to Boucher Field on Friday at 7:00 p.m. for a North Atlantic Conference matchup.
