The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) and the Maine Department of Education (DOE), together with statewide agriculture organizations, have announced the Maine Agriculture Policy Day at the Legislature. The event is scheduled for March 18, 2025.

The day provides selected students an opportunity to gain insights into state government and agricultural policymaking. Participants will tour the Maine State House, meet legislators and industry stakeholders, and join a session with the Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry (ACF) Joint Standing Committee. Additionally, students will engage in virtual pre- and post-sessions to prepare them for advocating agricultural policies that impact Maine's farming communities.

This event coincides with National Agriculture Day and Maine Agriculture Day at the Legislature. It celebrates farmers, producers, and agricultural leaders vital to Maine's economy and rural heritage. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Hall of Flags at the State Capitol will host exhibits, discussions, and networking events showcasing Maine's agricultural industry.

Students interested in attending must apply by February 21, 2025. The program targets a limited number of students who are enthusiastic about agriculture and policy engagement.

"This initiative is an excellent opportunity for Maines future agricultural leaders to gain valuable insights, connect with decision-makers, and help shape the future of agriculture in our state."

In line with this event is the celebration of 2025 as the Year of Youth in Agriculture in Maine. This initiative aims to inspire young farmers, foresters, and agricultural leaders while highlighting their contributions to shaping food systems, natural resource management, and rural economies in Maine. It seeks to foster connections between youth, industry professionals, and communities to ensure a resilient agricultural future.
