The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team dropped both games in their doubleheader this afternoon to Lesley University. The Beavers dropped game one 10-4 before falling in game two 10-0. Today's doubleheader marked the 1st games the Beavers have played in New England this season.
Game One
Despite playing in the cold weather for the 1st time this season, the Beavers bats stayed hot as they were able to jump out to a quick lead just three batters into the game. Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) ripped a triple to left-center and Hunter LaBossiere (Oxford, Maine) followed with a double to the right-center field gap to give the Beavers the lead. Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) came through with a two-out single to center to score LaBossiere and double the Beavers lead.
The Beavers were unable to hold onto the lead for long as the Lynx answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st. Adam Budorick led off the inning with a double and Jake Samela was hit by a pitch to give Lesley 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Colby Jacobs followed with a triple to right-center scoring both Budorick and Samela and tied the game at two. Jacobs came around to score on an RBI groundout.
Farmington re-tied the game in the top of the 2nd. Tyler Lambert (Lyman, Maine) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Derek Gendreau (Hampden, Maine) followed with a walk and Danny Terhune (South Burlington, Vermont) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Lambert and Gendreau over to 2nd and 3rd with just one out. Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) singled to center to score Lambert and knot the game up at three.
The Lynx had a big 3rd inning, scoring four runs on four hits to take a 7-3 lead. Trevor Faison and Christian Vignola ripped back-to-back RBI triples in the inning.
The Beavers cut into the deficit in the top of the 4th on another triple from Coombs, driving in Terhune who reached on an error to lead off the inning.
The Lynx were able to tack on single runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings en route to the 10-4 victory.
Coombs, LaBossiere, and Parsell each went 2-4 with an RBI to lead the Beavers. For the Lynx, Faison went 3-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, Jacobs was 2-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs, and Christian McElroy was 2-4 with two runs scored. Lynx starting pitcher Dylan Langston pitched six innings giving up three earned and striking out five to pick up the win.
Game Two
The Beavers bats went cold in game two as they were only able to muster a pair of hits in the 10-0 defeat.
The Lynx opened the scoring in the 2nd inning when McElory singled to right to score Faison. They tacked on two more runs in the inning on a Colin McCarthy SAC fly and a Budorick RBI single.
Lesley broke the game open in the bottom of the 4th inning. Faison led off with a hit by pitch. Andrew Gryniewicz was the next batter and drilled one over the left field wall to make it 5-0. McElroy came up right after and hit a home run to right field of his own as the Lynx went back-to-back. The Lynx tacked on three more runs in the inning making it 9-0.
Budorick tacked on an RBI single in the bottom of the 5th to make it 10-0 and finish off the scoring.
Coombs and Gendreau each recorded hits for the Beavers. Gryniewicz was 3-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Lynx. Budorick, Samela, and McElroy each went 2-4 with two RBIs for Lesley.
Brian Jacobus pitched all seven innings, striking out 12 in the complete game shutout.
