THE LEAD – Outscoring the St. Joe's Monks in the first three quarters, the Emmanuel Saints men's lacrosse team had plenty of offensive firepower on Saturday, as they claimed a 17-14 victory on Clemente Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints used a 7-2 first quarter to establish momentum in the early going of Saturday's conference bout. Included in the big first quarter lead was EC starting with the first five goals of the afternoon. Five different goal scorers for Emmanuel scored in the first 7:33, helping the Saints to a 5-0 lead.
Just 97 seconds into the game, senior Colin Dickinson (Barre, Vt.) opened up the scoring, giving EC a 1-0 lead. Senior Ryan Castle (Boxford, Mass.) and junior Thomas Quigley (Marblehead, Mass.) were next on the board, scoring 56 seconds apart, for a 3-0 lead. Later in the quarter, first-year Cole Cloney (Medfield, Mass.) and junior Aiden Sullivan (Burlington, Conn.) netted goals in a 39-second span, boosting the Emmanuel lead to 5-0.
After two goals each for the Saints and the Monks in the first quarter ended the frame at 7-2, the scoring spree continued in the second quarter with EC holding a 5-4 advantage in the second quarter. SJC closed to within five, but Cloney capped off the scoring in the first half, as the Saints held a 12-6 edge at halftime.
Scoring came late in the third quarter, but the Saints momentum carried them to a 4-2 third quarter advantage, extending their lead to 16-8. The Monks made a late run in the final 3:53 of the game, scoring four goals over that time, but the EC lead was too large to overcome as the Saints took home a 17-14 win.
