Legislators in Augusta will reconvene on January 8, with Senate and House sessions scheduled for January 14, 21, and 28. Updated committee assignments show changes in leadership and member roles, impacting how committees operate and how bills are debated.

A key deadline for lawmakers is January 10, when they must submit draft titles and details of bills they wish to sponsor in the 2025 session.

Changes might be made to rules concerning concept drafts, which lack proposed legal language. Lawmakers hope to provide clearer proposals to the public and state officials, who currently receive drafts days or hours before hearings.

Governor Janet Mills will announce the proposed State Budget for the 2025-26 to 2026-27 fiscal biennium on January 10. This balanced budget will outline expected revenues and expenditures. Updates will be available on the state's budget website.

The Maine Climate Action Council has unveiled an updated four-year plan for meeting "Maine Won’t Wait" goals, focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The report highlights the need for accelerated emission reduction to meet targets for 2030 and 2050 and to help limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
