Meet Hybrid Learning Unity College student Marlena

Marlena recently took the Transdisciplinary Capstone course at Unity College with Professor Richard Hudnett.

"I am joining Unity College from North Carolina. Before enrolling at Unity College, I was in the United States Marine Corps and taking college courses while working towards my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. During nursing school, I realized that I didn’t love what I was getting into therefor, I switched career paths which brought me to Unity College. I always had a passion for animals and the environment, but I was deterred from that career path because of the challenges I would have to overcome and the competitiveness of finding a job. However, I didn’t care at the end of the day because I wanted to do what I loved and go to work enjoying what I do.

I chose Unity because it has a curriculum geared toward exotic animal care and the environment. I am earning my Bachelor's degree in Captive Wildlife Care. I'm hoping that the education at Unity will give me the knowledge and experience needed to get a job working with exotic animals.

In the Transdisciplinary Capstone course, I most enjoyed that the class was projected-based and geared toward my career path. I felt like every class had substantial meaning unlike my experience taking classes at other colleges. At other institutions, I felt like I was wasting my time and money.

My future career goals are to become a Zookeeper, eventually working my way up to Curator. I also strive to educate the public by spreading knowledge to help give wildlife and our environment a voice."
