Recent findings by the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) reveal that the Just-In-Time bowling alley in Maine, where a mass shooting took place, was a gun-free zone. The nearby Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant was also impacted by the shooting and was reported to be a gun-free zone as well.
According to the CPRC article, photos of signs on the door of the bowling alley showed a request for the building to remain a gun-free zone. The article also mentioned that two sources claimed that Schemengees was also a gun-free zone.
The shooting occurred on the evening of Oct. 25 when the shooter, Robert Card, entered the Just-In-Time bowling alley and later the Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant. Card fatally shot 18 people and wounded at least 13 others. The 40-year-old Army reservist managed to escape and authorities were still searching for him in the area at the time of the report. As a result, public buildings in nearby cities were closed and residents were advised to stay safe within their homes.
John Lotts Jr, president of the CPRC, shared an article on platform X, providing details on the two sites of the shooting likely being gun-free zones. The CPRC article mentioned that the bowling alley had a paper posted on the door requesting patrons to leave their weapons in their vehicles, as seen in a photo from their social media. The article also stated that two sources claimed Schemengees was a gun-free zone.
The CPRC research report highlighted that 94% of mass shootings between 1950 and March 27, 2023, occurred in gun-free zones. Narrowing the time period down to between 1998 and March 27, 2023, the statistic showed that 84% of mass shootings occurred in gun-free zones. Additionally, the report provided statistics and data on various factors of mass shooters and shootings, including rage, age, mental health history, military service, and geography.
The recent mass shooting at the Just-In-Time bowling alley and the impact on the Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant has brought attention to the issue of gun-free zones and their potential impact on public safety.
