The Maine Department of Transportation has shifted traffic on Western Avenue (Route 202) in Augusta to a temporary bridge. This change is part of the ongoing project to replace the bridge that carries Western Avenue over I-95 at Exit 109.

Traffic is now limited to two lanes: one for eastbound and one for westbound travel, with an additional lane dedicated to westbound off-ramp traffic. The temporary bridge will be in use until the new permanent structure is completed by the end of this year.

Additionally, the left-hand turn lane from Western Avenue onto Whitten Road is closed. Westbound drivers wishing to access Whitten Road can utilize the southbound interstate on-ramps for a new connection between the interstate on-ramp and Whitten Road.

The southbound Exit 109 off-ramp closure will continue indefinitely.

The existing bridge, which is around 70 years old, is being replaced with a new structure that offers more vertical clearance over the interstate. The new design includes sidewalks on both sides and approximately 1,350 feet of new sidewalk along Western Avenue and Whitten Road to enhance pedestrian safety.

Construction began in November 2023 and is expected to conclude in June 2026. Reed & Reed, Inc., based in Woolwich, has been contracted for this $30 million project.
