Maine's Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Commissioner Amanda Beal has called on the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins, to expedite the release of federal funds that are currently being withheld. These funds are crucial for Maine farmers and agricultural service providers who are experiencing economic difficulties due to these delays.

In her communication to Secretary Rollins, Commissioner Beal stressed the importance of honoring existing contracts and grant reimbursements that many in Maine's agricultural sector rely upon. She warned that the continued delay could have serious economic consequences for this sector, which often operates with limited financial margins.

"As you prioritize your work in the coming days, I write to emphasize the importance of honoring contracts and reimbursement grant funds already encumbered for farms and our agricultural sector," stated Beal in her letter. She pointed out that unpaid bills can quickly lead to significant economic impacts on businesses, especially farms operating under tight margins.

Commissioner Beal referred to a recent report from the Portland Press Herald highlighting the financial uncertainty faced by Maine farmers due to withheld federal funds. She also mentioned specific delays in payments through the USDA's Resilient Food System Initiative, noting $105,000 in unpaid invoices submitted on February 4 that remain unprocessed.

"These requests represent expenses Maine farmers have already incurred believing they would be reimbursed because they have a binding contract with the USDA through the State of Maine," explained Beal. Withholding these funds is causing harm to farmers.

Beal also expressed concern about tens of millions of dollars being withheld from non-profits and service providers vital to supporting Maine's agricultural economy. She urged the USDA to expedite fund reviews and releases to prevent further disruptions.

"As someone who is also passionate about agriculture and cares very much for every farm in our state, I ask that you expedite the review of funds that are already committed to farmers and the entities that support them and uphold the obligations as outlined in those contracts," concluded Beal.

The appeal by Commissioner Beal highlights the critical role federal funding plays in sustaining Maine’s agricultural economy. The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry will continue its efforts with farmers, service providers, and federal partners for timely financial resource releases.
