Governor Janet Mills has declared March 17-23, 2025, as Maine Agriculture Week to honor the state's agricultural community. The week will feature Maine Agriculture Day at the Legislature on March 18 at the State House in Augusta. The event will include a Hall of Flags showcase from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., displaying exhibits from farmers and over thirty agricultural organizations.

For the first time, Youth in Agriculture Policy Day will be part of the event, aimed at engaging future agricultural leaders. This initiative is organized by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) in collaboration with the Maine Department of Education (DOE), Future Farmers of America (FFA), and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H. Eleven students from high school to college levels will participate.

"Through events like Youth In Agriculture Policy Day, Maine is cultivating a strong crop of engaged, informed, and inspired young people ready to lead the future of agriculture in the state," said Governor Mills.

"Agriculture is essential to Maines economy, culture, and heritage. This week is an opportunity to honor the hardworking people who keep our agricultural industry strong and to inspire the next generation of agricultural leaders," said DACF Commissioner Amanda Beal.

"Youth in Agriculture Policy Day provides a wonderful opportunity for students to have a seat at the table - and to feel seen, heard, and excited about their futures," said Maine DOE Commissioner Pender Makin.

Maine's celebration coincides with National Agriculture Day, emphasizing agriculture's role nationwide while showcasing unique aspects of Maine's agriculture sector.

Earlier this year, Governor Mills announced that 2025 would be celebrated as Maines Year of Youth in Agriculture. The Youth In Agriculture Policy Day aims to connect students with policymakers and industry leaders as part of this initiative.

In her proclamation, Governor Mills noted that Maine agriculture contributes over $3.2 billion annually to the state's economy and supports tens of thousands of jobs while enhancing food security.

The proclamation also highlights climate-smart farming practices' growing importance alongside agricultural education and innovation in shaping Maine's future landscape.

Maine's diverse agricultural community includes family farms, aquaculture operations, forestry activities, and agri-tourism efforts reflecting local food commitment and rural vitality.

The public can visit the Hall of Flags on March 18 without reservations or tickets required; entry is through State House security screening. Further details are available on the Capital Police webpage.
