Young agricultural leaders from across Maine recently convened at the State House for Agriculture Policy Day, a significant event within the Year of Youth in Agriculture initiative. This gathering allowed 4-H and FFA members to engage with Governor Mills, the Joint Standing Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, and other lawmakers. The event provided these young individuals with opportunities to participate in legislative processes and express their enthusiasm for agriculture's role in both rural and urban communities.

The participants interacted with staff from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) and the Maine Department of Education (DOE), discussing agricultural advancement and education. They emphasized the importance of youth involvement in Maine's agricultural sector.

"It was exciting to spend the day with this cohort of young people, who have already demonstrated strong leadership attributes and represent a bright future for agriculture in Maine," said DACF Commissioner Amanda Beal. Their enthusiasm, ideas, and deep connection to farming and their communities is inspiring, and we are proud to elevate their voices in discussions that will result in policies that impact agriculture in Maine."

Maine DOE Commissioner Pender Makin stated: "Agriculture Policy Day embodies the purpose of the Year of Youth in Agriculture: to provide students with a voice and an opportunity to share their lived experiences and be recognized. It is essential that we continue to nurture the passion that these young people have for agriculture an industry vital to our state and encourage them to view themselves as future leaders of Maine."

The students involved brought diverse backgrounds to the discussion, including those from multigenerational family farms as well as first-generation farms. They shared a common objective: ensuring agriculture remains integral to Maine's economy, culture, and identity.

Agriculture Policy Day served as a key event celebrating Maine's Year of Youth in Agriculture—a statewide initiative focused on supporting future farmers, producers, and advocates. Throughout 2025, efforts will continue to highlight young agricultural leaders through various events, educational opportunities, and leadership programs.

As these students return home, they carry new insights into how policy influences their futures along with connections to leaders who value their input. Their experiences at Agriculture Policy Day are expected to shape their advocacy efforts moving forward.
