Alfred, ME — On June 23, 2023, U.S. Senator Susan Collins visited the York County Shelter Programs (YCSP) in Alfred, Maine. The organization offers needed services, such as emergency and transitional housing, vocational training, case management, meals, medical assistance, and mental health and substance use disorder treatment. During her visit, Senator Collins met with the dedicated staff and leadership of YCSP to discuss her commitment to combat homelessness throughout Maine.
"The York County Shelter Programs’ commitment to improving communities across York County is truly remarkable," said Senator Collins. “The progress we are making to reduce homelessness for our most vulnerable individuals and families is the result of the hard work and passion of organizations like the YCSP and I look forward to continuing to advance this important work together.”
Earlier this year, Senator Collins and Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), wrote a letter, urging the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide more housing security to youth who are aging out of foster care. The Senators emphasized that transition-aged foster youth often face difficulties and delays in accessing Foster Youth to Independence housing vouchers and other housing resources.
In March, the Council of State Community Development Agencies (COSCDA)—a national association that brings together state leaders on housing, homelessness, local economic development, and disaster recovery—recognized Senator Collins with their first-ever Congressional Partnership Award.
